Vmware Esx Server - how to install

How to install a VMware Esx Server?

ESX server is a free not open (EULA) software but there are also several not free versions with several attached services, such as Premium Support, courses and so on. Here I'll take care only of the free version.

At the time of writing, the latest version of the hypervisor is the 4.0 (aka Vsphere server) but I had to use the 3.5 for the reasons explained here.

ESX server can be easily and quickly installed on the server using the iso image provided by VMware or even through an installer on a windows machine. I will consider only on the iso process. As common, big companies (or marketing people working for big companies) aren't capable to communicate with the reader: that's why a so simple procedure requires a guide.

The installation process for version 3.0 and 4.0 is equal, while one of the main difference beetween 3.5 and 4.0 is that the first is 32 bit, the second 64 bit.
If you like video tutorials, here there is one you might like: it's about version 4.0, installed as a virtual machine on a windows host.

Download and install
This is the download page for 4.0 and this is for 3.5.
To access the download page you need to be a registered (it's free).
Once downloaded, burn the iso on a cd and boot your server from the cd-rom drive. Follow the trivial steps and set a root password as shown in the video.
Once the server is up and running, open a browser from a windows host and point it to the Esx server:
If you are on a windows machine you can download and install the VMware Infrastructure Client and you are ready to use your server through the VMware Infrastructure Client.
If you are using linux and, like me, you refuse to load a local virtual machine just to load the VMware Infrastructure Client to load and use the virtual machine you want (sounds like a matrioska!!) you should read this post.

Licencing

Both the version 3.5 and 4.0  (aka Vsphere Server, aka ESXi server) come as trial software and you need to register this serial number visible in the download page to avoid misfunctionalities at the expiration date.

The licence code for the standalone version can be obtained by everyone for free following the instructions written on the vmware website.

This is for 3.5

This is for 4.0

The licence can be registered through the Virtual Infrastructure Client (aka Vsphere Client) following this procedure:

  • Login to ESXi with the VMware Infrastructure Client
  • Go to section Inventionary -> tab Configuration -> Software -> Licensed Features -> License Source
  • In opened window check Use serial number and put the number you got there

as described here.
