How to fix evolution date format issue
A short how-to to fix the annoying Evolution (Gnome default mail client) issue which prevents a proper date format to be displayed.
My pc is set in english (exactly en_US.UTF-8) as EVERY pc in the world should be. My keyboard layouts can be ONLY two: QWERTY USA or DVORAK USA (both with AltGR international dead keys, necessary when I type in italian). This means to be standard compliant.
Unfortunately, this doesn't solve all the issues. The date format used in USA is not standard compliant and a messy, above all if you are european. The iso standard uses YYYY-MM-DD HH:SS
The en_DK.UTF8 layout seems to be only one to be iso compliant.
Evolution inherits the language settings and formats from the environment settings, and this is right. Every application should do that but with the en_US settings it will turn into having dates formatted in this way: MM/DD/YYYY and hours split into a.m. and p.m. which is not ISO standard compliant.
Just to be clear, it's true that I'm fixed with standards but, be careful, it's not only about a mania: using wrong date formats you can screw up your handhelds, such as your palm, your organizer and your mobile phone, in case they are synchronized with evolution or any other email client.
To fix this, edit your system wide /etc/profile and add these lines at the end of it

Please don't do this but if you hate yourself and want to see the dates in the italian "common" way just set :
LC_TIME="it_IT.UTF-8"

Notes:
- If you try to set this variables in ~/bash_profile it won't work, probably because evolution reads the system settings (this is a bug imho)
- If you try to set this variables only in ~/bashrc it works only if you start evolution from a terminal
- Please note the
LC_ALL=""
If you set it, it will override every other LC_* setting because it has a higher priority.

I think that's because gdm doesn't read the user's ~/.bashrc, so doesn't pass the environment values set there to the gnome session -> programs launched from it.
Maybe, using the ~/.profile could work, but I've not tested that.
